What is this tool?

Image to ASCII Art Generator maps the pixel grids of an image onto a set of ASCII text symbols sorted by brightness (optical density), producing retro text-based graphics.

How to use it

1. Select an image file.

2. Choose a density scale (standard, blocky, or simple) and set your target width/resolution.

3. Adjust the brightness, contrast, or color toggle settings.

4. Click "Generate ASCII" to view the render.

5. Click "Copy" or "Download" to save your art.

Pro tips

  • For best results, use high-contrast images with clean backgrounds (like logos or portrait silhouettes).
  • If copying to platforms like Discord, wrap the text inside triple backticks (```) to enforce a monospace layout.

Frequently asked questions

What is ASCII Art?

ASCII art is a graphic design technique that uses printable characters from the ASCII specification (such as letters, numbers, and symbols) to form a visual pattern or picture when viewed in a monospace font.

Can I generate colored ASCII art?

Yes! Our generator features a "Colored" mode that styles each character with the exact pixel color from your source image, making it render in full color.

Why does the text art look stretched or compressed?

Monospace text characters are taller than they are wide (usually about a 1:1.6 or 1:2 ratio). To prevent your image from looking vertically stretched, our generator automatically scales down the vertical dimension by a correction factor when mapping pixels to characters.
